About Sail Habilitation
Sail-Habilitation is a
community based program that provides recreational, instructional and
competitive sailing opportunities for persons with physical disabilities and
other special needs. It was created in 1994 by Dr. Stephanie Argyris, a
physiatrist and sailor in Toms River, N.J.
It is a community integrated sailing program that enhances the
rehabilitation process through physical activities and cognitive and
psychological skill building. By focusing on capabilities instead of on the
disabilities, self sufficiency and wellness are promoted. Sailing in and of
itself provides an exhilarating experience. It also provides an opportunity
for participants to sail with able-bodied and other individuals who are
disabled on a recreational basis. This integration reinforces the goal of
the rehabilitation process which is to get back to living as best as one
can. Independence, communication skills, physical balance, problem solving
skills and leadership skills are fostered in a challenging environment.
Each participant is able to choose his/her level of program involvement.
The Sail-Habilitation program runs May 1st through October 31st and
consists of five levels.:
Recreational sailing - participants experience the joy of
sailing while being instructed in boating safety and encouraged to actively
participate in the operations of the sailboat as their abilities permit.
Instructional sailing - teaches basic sailing and includes
dockside lectures. The special needs of each challenged individual are
addressed and accommodated.
Competitive sailing - available for those with adequate skills
for sailboat racing.
Community Sailing Days - three day events during the summer.
Community based skippers from local yacht clubs and marinas take individuals
with disabilities out on their own private boats followed by a BBQ.
Fifth component - serves individuals who are newly disabled as
they meet and sail with those who
have successfully reintegrated into a full meaningful lifestyle with their
residual disabilities. These
individuals serve as valuable role models for sailing and for life.
Sail-Habilitation Clients
Over the past ten years, Sail-Habilitation has served individuals with many
different disabilities and many unusual special needs such as amputation,
spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, stroke
(cerebral vascular accidents), Alzheimer's, and struggling cancer patients
to name but a few. Sailing experiences are offered primarily to clients in
Ocean and Monmouth counties but individuals also come from the greater New
York/ Philadelphia metropolitan areas. Client ages range from 8 to 85.
The program does not discriminate against socio-economic status (as all
services are free), race, gender, ethnicity, age, physical disability, nor
language.
Awards
Sail-Habilitation has received numerous awards and has been featured in many
articles and publications.
